Detroit, MI—The body of a sailor who went missing after an SUV wreck occurred at the Bayview Yacht Club was discovered in the water Sunday, June 6, 2010, a day after the accident. The initial crash sent nine people to area hospitals, according to information provided by the Detroit Free Press.
Reports indicated a 68-year-old motorist lost control of his SUV after jumping a curb at the yacht club Saturday night. On impact, the sport utility vehicle was seemingly sent careening into a crowd of people standing on the dock.
Emergency medical services (EMS) teams were dispatched to the scene to rush those injured to area hospitals. In all, nine accident victims were taken to various Detroit hospitals for treatment. All but two people injured in the crash were released prior to Sunday afternoon.
However, one person had not been seen since the injurious dock crash. The yacht club apparently notified the Coast Guard in Detroit that a 44-year-old sailor, Mike Badendieck, had been inadvertently unaccounted for after the incident.
According to Petty Officer Nathan Mathis, a Coast Guard crew was dispatched to the marina to search for the man. At approximately noon, Badendieck’s body was discovered submerged in the water.
Members of the Detroit Police Dive Team were sent to the scene to recover the body. Preliminary witness accounts “indicated that everyone was safe and accounted for. A topside search of the area revealed no other victims,” Detroit police spokesperson John Roach added.
“It is a terrible loss, and we are in mourning,” said the Bayview Yacht Club in a statement released after the accident. The statement also noted the cause of the SUV wreck remains under investigation.
