Daytona Beach, FL—A Port Orange firefighter was arrested on Monday, May 24, 2010 on charges of burglary of a residence and scheme to defraud, after the firefighter was accused of taking prescription drugs that belonged to homeowner’s son. Michael Michaud was allegedly going to homes while off-duty to “conduct a follow-up investigation,” but instead, he was stealing the homeowner’s prescription pills, as reported by WESH.

Police officials reported that one resident alerted police that her prescription medication was stolen from her home. The homeowner reported that fire rescue was called to her home to assist her 37-year-old son. Days later, Michaud returned to the residence to “complete an inventory of prescription medication, when in fact he did steal them.”

Through his scheme, police believe Michaud stole thousands of pills for his “own use and benefit.”

During a search of Michaud’s home, detectives found 12,000 prescription pills. Officials reported that the massive amount of pills actually belonged to a deceased person, whom he likely stole from.

Michaud’s bond was set at $25,000 for burglary and an additional $25,000 was added for engaging in a scheme to defraud. He was taken to Volusia County Branch Jail.

Michaud has reportedly been with the city fire department for 11 years.

The investigation is ongoing.
