Ken Caryl CO workplace accident: 3,000 lbs. safe falls, suffocates man to death

Ken Caryl, CO– Firefighters rushed to the Chase Bank in Ken Caryl after receiving a call that a worker who was installing a new safe was slowing suffocating to death while others watched helplessly. Rescue teams rushed to the bank located at 12482 W. Ken Caryl Avenue on Thursday, May 13, 2010, as reported by TheDenverChannel.com.
A 38-year-old worker, who was not identified, was trying to install a new safe when the 3,000-pound steel safe somehow fell off the dolly and pinned the worker against the only door in the room. Several people were reportedly in the room when the safe fell, but they could do nothing more than watch the worker slowly suffocate to death.
West Metro Fire rescue teams had to cut through two walls to rescue to worker and the group of people since the worker was trapped against the only door in the room.
Security and Safe of Colorado reportedly employed the worker, who was upgrading the bank to a larger safe when the accident took place. The Chase branch reportedly does not have vaults, only safes.
Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies and investigators with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the fatal accident.
