Charlotte, NC—A pickup truck violently rear-ended a school bus and struck a car on Monday, April 26, 2010, sending eight people, including six elementary school students, to area hospitals. The injurious bus accident occurred at the intersection of Nevin and Gibbon roads in the University area of Charlotte, North Carolina, according to information provided by WCNC.com.

A spokesperson for Carolinas Medical Center (CMS) allegedly reported a pickup truck was traveling on Nevin Road when it rammed into the back of the school bus, which was stopped at a red light. The pickup truck also reportedly struck a car, which was pulling out of a parking lot at the time. The multiple-vehicle collision occurred at approximately 8:45 a.m.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel responded to the scene of the bus wreck to transport those injured to area hospitals for treatment. Of the 18 students aboard school bus No. 1118 from John M. Morehead Elementary School, six suffered injuries and were taken to Carolinas Medical Center to be treated by doctors and nurses. Both the driver of the school bus and the driver of the pickup truck sustained injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment as well. The driver of the car, who was identified only as Briana, managed to escape injury in the motor vehicle accident.

According to Morehead Elementary School’s assistant principle, Bobbi Bigelow, “We had some [students] with minor injuries that were immediately transported to CMC. All of the parents were notified… We’re glad everything worked out fine and they’re safe.”

It was unknown whether any controlled substances might have been potential factors in the pickup truck-involved bus accident. Investigations are expected to be underway.
