Boulder, CO—A teenage driver hits a family of three who were riding their bicycles in Boulder, which left the entire family injured. The accident happened on Thursday, August 6, 2009 around 1:10 p.m., as reported by 9news.com, an NBC affiliate.

According to Boulder Police, 17-year-old Daniel Valsberg, of Westminster was driving his green Saab northbound when he struck the family, who were trying to cross 28th Street with their bicycles. The pedestrian crossing lights were apparently flashing when the family attempted to cross the street with their bikes. The mother, Gail Giuliani, 44, and her daughter Elli Zadow, 10, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Giuliani’s son, Hayden Zadow, 7, was critically injured and was rushed to the Boulder Community Hospital by area emergency medical service (EMS) crews. Hayden was later airlifted by helicopter to The Children’s Hospital in Aurora, where he is being treated for serious head and back injuries, and is currently listed in critical condition. Valsberg allegedly indicated to police that he didn’t notice the pedestrian crosswalk lights were flashing. Police officials also believe he may have been eating his lunch at the time of the collision, which may have distracted him. Boulder authorities intend to charge Valsberg with the collision but are waiting to hear how seriously injured the boy is.
