New York, NY–The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) www.fda.gov reported a recall on I ? NY Fish brand Imperial-European Style Smoked Salmon. The firm, N.Y. Fish, Inc., is based out of Brooklyn, New York. The smoked salmon products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a rare, but deadly bacterial infection. Listeriosis usually affects newborns, the elderly, and people with poor immune systems. For otherwise healthy people, listeriosis symptoms include fever, stiff neck, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, constipation, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant women are at risk for stillbirths and miscarriages when exposed to the harmful bacteria. The New York fish distributor issued the recall on Friday.

The FDA and the New York firm recalled the possibly contaminated products in the following sizes:
-3 oz
-8 oz
-16 oz
– Whole side “to be weighed at time of sale” sizes

The recalled salmon items were sold to food wholesalers and retailers in the following states: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

A random sampling of the smoked salmon items identified Listeria monocytogenes in the fish products. However, no illnesses related to the recalled smoked salmon items have been reported. Consumption of the previously listed products should be stopped immediately. A full refund of these specific products is available at the place of purchase. Consumers who may have consumed products contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes should consult a physician immediately. Victims of contaminated food may be entitled to compensation for their illness and injury.
