Seneca meat company recalls E. coli infected beef trimmings

Feds issue Class I recall for E. coli infected Seneca meat products.

Seneca, SC(JusticeNewsFlash.com)–The United States Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) www.fsis.usda.gov, an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) www.usda.gov, which is responsible for ensuring the safety of the nation’s egg, poultry, and meat products, issued a recall of about 75 pounds of fresh beef trim products. The recalled meat product was produced by Snow Creek Meat Processing company. Snow Creek Meat Processing is based out of Seneca, South Carolina. The recall is categorized as a Class I, meaning consumers, who ingest the possibly contaminated meat, are susceptible to developing an infection that can lead to serious illness, injury, or death. The South Carolina beef distributor cooperated with the Class I recall, after discovering some of their products were contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

The following product may be contaminated and is under federal and recall:

- Cryovac bags of “BEEF TRIMMINGS, BEEF ITEM” in assorted sizes with an establishment number of “20478” on the inside of the USDA mark of inspection, and a “06/02/09” “Sell By” date.

The possibly contaminated beef items were made on June 2, 2009. Retailers in North Carolina and South Carolina received shipments of the Oconee County based recalled products. Currently, there are no known reports of illness related to these possibly contaminated food products. An E. coli infection may cause bloody diarrhea and kidney failure, especially in newborns, elderly people, and consumers with poor immune systems.

Federal regulators and the South Carolina beef distributor assert consumption of the Class I, recalled beef trim products should be stopped immediately. Consumers, who believe they have been infected, should contact a physician immediately. Victims of food-borne illnesses, or food poisoning, may be entitled to compensation for their injuries.
