Long Island sausage and duck distributor recalls meat for possible bacteria poisoning.

New York, NY(Justicenewsflash.com)–The United States Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) www.fsis.usda.gov, an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), responsible for ensuring the safety of the nation’s egg, poultry, and meat products, issued a recall of about 564 pounds of kolbase sausage products and duck leg confit possibly contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The distributor, Schaller Mfg. Corp. (Schaller & Weber) from Long Island City, New York, cooperated with the voluntary recall after reporting the products to FSIS on Wednesday.

The following products are under recall:

-2.5 pound approximate-weight vacuum packages, 6 legs per package, of “D’ ARTAGNAN TRADITIONAL DUCK LEG CONFIT” having a “USE BY/FREEZE BY” date of “08/07/09” and a “P-5374” establishment number inside the USDA mark of inspection.

-2.5 pound approximate-weight vacuum packages of “Schaller & Weber HUNGARIAN BRAND KOLBASE” having a “MFG. 005159” date code and an “EST. 5374” establishment number inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The sausage and duck food products were sent to restaurants and food distributors in the following states: Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Company managers with the New York food manufacturing company say the possibly contaminated sausage and duck recalled products were made on May 13, 2009 and were also sold at Schaller & Weber’s New York City retail establishment.

As of today, there have not been any cases of illnesses related to these products. Although rare, Listeria monocytogenes can cause Listeriosis, a fatal bacterial infection. Listeriosis usually affects newborns, the elderly, and people with poor immune systems. For otherwise healthy people, listeriosis symptoms include fever, stiff neck, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, constipation, loss of balance, and convulsions. Consumption of these products should be stopped immediately. Consumers who believe they have been infected should consult a physician immediately. Questions may be directed to the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854).
